At Garden City, it is golf, pure golf, and nothing but golf. The club was founded in 1899 and has been an all-male
club since Devereux Emmett built the golf course. Since then Walter Travis, Robert Trent Jones, and Tom Doak
have added their 2 cents to the course, but at its core it is an Emmett design. Being the golf fanatic that I am, the
fact that Garden City is a golfing only club really resonates with me and gathers like-minded people to enjoy the
history and traditions of our great game.
Regarding the course itself, it starts off with a subtle bang with a multiple options tee shot where you can make the
longer carry to have an unobstructed view to the green or take the short carry with the tougher approach. Pick
your poison. The second hole is a wonderful par 3 with a diabolical bunker fronting the shallow green.
From there the course continues to build on itself as the firm and fast turf, subtle greens, and wonderfully strategic
design seems to get better and better. You will see wonderful centerline bunkers…
Fairway ridges…
And interesting cape holes…
As the course routes you from the busy streets of Garden City, NY into the secluded meadow and back again on
this wonderful journey of a golf course.
